Translation

Treats an enduring dysentery with such exhaustion and weakness that the patient cannot rise from bed. White atractylodes, white peony and tangerine peel, 1 don each; tangkuei, 7 fun; astragalus, ginseng, alisma, amomum and sanguisorba, 5 fun each; cimicifuga, costus root, round cardamom, vinegar-stir-fried poppy husk and roasted licorice, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct in water on an empty stomach. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Bojung-ikgi-tang rebuilt for the bowel: the astragalus-and-ginseng core with cimicifuga to lift, and sanguisorba, amomum and poppy husk added for the bleeding, the digestion and the frequency. The indication — cannot rise from bed — places it at the end of a long illness, where the question is no longer the dysentery but whether the patient can be got back on their feet. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
