Translation

Treats vacuity dysentery and enduring dysentery and all the dysenteries. Coptis, 4 nyang, steeped in an evodia decoction and stir-fried; costus root, 1 nyang; opium, 2 don. Powder, make pills with aged-rice paste the size of a mung bean, and swallow twenty or thirty each time with a lotus-seed decoction; cover up and go to sleep, and the effect is marvellous. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Opium, named outright, in the chapter's most effective and most dangerous prescription. The Immun's instruction to cover up and go to sleep describes what the drug does, and the marvellous effect is not in doubt: opium stops a dysentery. It also masks a worsening colitis, stops the gut in a patient who may be septic, and is addictive — which is why this formula, unlike most in the chapter, could not be made as written today. **This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
