Translation

Treats heat toxin with a dysentery of pus and blood. Sanguisorba, rhinoceros horn, stir-fried coptis, pueraria and scutellaria, 1 don each; gardenia, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add five stalks of Chinese chive, and decoct together. — Hwarin Seo 活人 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The presence of rhinoceros horn marks this as a formula for the febrile end of the disease — the tradition reserved it for heat that had entered the blood, which here means a dysentery with high fever and prostration rather than a local complaint. Pueraria is the interesting addition, used to raise the clear qi and relieve the thirst, and Chinese chive as the vehicle is a pungent counterweight to five cold drugs. The horn cannot be used and nothing is lost by omitting it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
