治熱毒下痢膿血, 或如爛肉汁. 黃連ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ黃栢ㆍ梔子各一錢二分半. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《海藏》

Translation

Treats heat toxin with a dysentery of pus and blood, or a stool like the juice of rotted flesh. Coptis, beaded ass-hide glue, phellodendron and gardenia, 1 don 2 fun 5 ri each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Haejang 海藏 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The description — a stool like the juice of rotted flesh — is the chapter's most vivid and one of its most clinically useful. That is the appearance of sloughed mucosa, which marks an invasive or necrotizing colitis rather than a simple dysentery, and the formula answers it with the three bitter cold drugs at equal weight and ass-hide glue to hold the blood.
