Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治濕熱惡痢, 下膿血. 白芍藥ㆍ黃栢皮 各一兩, 當歸ㆍ黃連 各五錢. 右爲末, 水丸小豆大, 溫水下三四十丸. 《子和》

Translation

Treats damp heat with a malign dysentery passing pus and blood. White peony and phellodendron bark, 1 nyang each; tangkuei and coptis, 5 don each. Powder, make water pills the size of an adzuki bean, and take thirty or forty in warm water. — Jahwa 子和 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs in a two-to-one ratio, made up as small water pills — the pill form matters, because a patient passing blood forty times a day cannot keep down decoctions. Peony and tangkuei for the blood, phellodendron and coptis for the heat, and nothing to bind: Jahwa's position throughout is that a dysentery must be cleared, not stopped. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
