Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治赤白痢及熱痢. 黃連三兩, 赤茯苓二兩. 右爲末, 水調阿膠(炒末) 一兩, 和丸梧子大, 空心, 米飮下三五十丸. 《局方》

Translation

Treats red and white dysentery, and hot dysentery. Coptis, 3 nyang; red poria, 2 nyang. Powder them, mix 1 nyang of stir-fried powdered ass-hide glue with water, and with it form pills the size of a paulownia seed; take thirty to fifty on an empty stomach in rice water. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs, with the ass-hide glue serving as both ingredient and binder — the pills are held together by the drug that is meant to hold the blood. Coptis and poria clear and drain; the glue replaces what has been lost.
