Translation

Treats red and white dysentery. Evodia and coptis, 1 nyang each. Steep them together in good wine for three days, then pick each out, dry it over the fire, powder it, and make pills with vinegar paste the size of a paulownia seed. For red dysentery take thirty of the coptis pills, swallowed down with a licorice decoction; for white dysentery thirty of the evodia pills with a dried-ginger decoction; for red and white dysentery take thirty of each with a decoction of licorice and dried ginger. Also called Hwangryeon-hwan. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The cleverest formula in the chapter. The two drugs are steeped together in wine so that each takes something of the other, then separated and made into two sets of pills — the cold coptis for the red dysentery, the warm evodia for the white, and both together when the stool is mixed. One preparation, three prescriptions, and the dispensing decision left to the bedside. For a disease whose nature is genuinely uncertain at onset, that is a sound design. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
