Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治赤白痢. 黃連 三兩, 阿膠珠 一兩半, 當歸 一兩, 乾薑 五錢. 右爲末, 醋糊和丸梧子大, 空心, 米飮下三五十丸. 《入門》

Translation

Treats red and white dysentery. Coptis, 3 nyang; beaded ass-hide glue, 1.5 nyang; tangkuei, 1 nyang; dried ginger, 5 don. Powder, make pills with vinegar paste the size of a paulownia seed, and take thirty to fifty on an empty stomach in rice water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs in a descending ratio and a formula that covers the whole ground of a dysentery in one line: coptis for the infection, ass-hide glue and tangkuei for the blood lost, ginger so that the cold does not injure the stomach.
