Translation

Treats vacuity taxation with the Kidney waned; supplements the essence and blood and nourishes the Yang Qi. Prepared rehmannia, deer antler velvet, schisandra and large Korean angelica, 4 nyang each; dioscorea, cornus, large aconite accessory root (blast-fried), achyranthes (wine-steeped) and cinnamon bark, 2 nyang each; white poria, moutan bark and alisma (wine-steeped one night), 1 nyang each. Powder the above; take half a geun of deer antler glue, cut it up, put it in a stone vessel with a little wine and melt it, and bind the powder with it into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds. Take 50 to 70 on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted broth. By one method the glue may be powdered and the pills made up with wine instead. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Heoro)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six Ingredients Rehmannia opened out and warmed. The three drainers of that formula — poria, moutan bark, alisma — are still here but demoted to a nyang each, the smallest share, while antler, angelica, schisandra and rehmannia sit at four nyang at the top. Aconite and cinnamon are then added to the lower half. The arithmetic is the whole prescription: a classical yin base kept in place as ballast while the formula is rebuilt as a yang tonic. 增益, augmented, is a claim about the two-herb Gwiyong-won that stands a few leaves earlier in the same chapter — angelica and antler alone. This is that pair with eleven more herbs and a half-geun of antler glue around it, and the chapter files it under Kidney and Gate of Life vacuity together rather than under blood. **Contains aconite accessory root, which is toxic, and deer antler and antler glue.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
