Translation

Treats hemiplegia with the flesh dried and wasted, which is called withered hemilateral. Sweating prescriptions are contraindicated; one must only moisten the sinews and dispel wind. Tangkuei, 1 nyang 5 don; red peony, dipsacus, atractylodes, ligusticum sinense and tiger bone, 1 nyang each; black-striped snake flesh, 5 don. Powder; 2 don each time, taken stirred into warm wine after food. For pain within the bones, add 1 nyang of raw rehmannia. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one entry in the section that states a contraindication, and it is the right one: in hemiplegia with the flesh already wasted, sweating prescriptions are forbidden, and the task is only to moisten the sinews and dispel wind. That is a real clinical distinction — the acute stroke and the chronic wasted limb need opposite treatment — and most of the chapter does not make it. The formula itself is tangkuei-led and mild, with the addition clause for bone pain showing a working physician's hand. Tiger bone is prohibited; the standard substitutions are dog or ox bone, and the formula functions without it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
