Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治偏正頭痛, 常服除根. 川芎 二兩ㆍ香附子 四兩, 爲末, 每二錢, 茶淸調下. 名點頭散. 《得效》

Translation

Treats one-sided and whole-head pain, and taken regularly it removes the root. Cnidium 2 nyang and cyperus 4 nyang, powdered; take 2 don a dose, stirred down in clear tea. It is called Jeomdu-san. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Du)

Clinical commentary 臨床

常服除根, taken regularly it removes the root — prophylaxis rather than abortive treatment, and the distinction is the central one in migraine management still. Two drugs only, and the proportion is the argument: twice as much cyperus as cnidium, so the formula treats the constraint behind the headache rather than the pain in front of it. That makes it a plausible prescription for the headache that comes with tension and with the menstrual cycle, which is how it is used in Korean practice. The name is the effect — the head nods, the pain having let go. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
