Translation

Dichroa root, tsaoko fruit, areca seed, anemarrhena, mume plum, blast-roasted pangolin scale and roasted licorice, 1 don each. Cut them up, make one packet, decoct in half wine and half water, and leave it out overnight in the dew. On the day the paroxysm is due take it warm in the early morning; getting vomiting is the course it should take. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The plain form of the chapter's 截瘧 strategy, with dichroa root as chief and the rest arranged around it: tsaoko fruit and areca seed to drive downward, pangolin scale to break the 癖 in the flank, anemarrhena against the heat, mume plum to hold the sweating, roasted licorice to take the edge off. The wine-and-water decoction left out overnight in the dew and drunk at dawn before the paroxysm is due is the 截 method exactly as 截瘧法 describes it — 當在三四日就截為好, best done on the third or fourth day, and never while the patient is still hot. 得吐爲順, getting vomiting is the course it should take, is the chapter saying out loud what it means by cutting off a malaria. The section explains the logic: 所以瘧劑多用常山, malarial prescriptions use dichroa because water above is vomited out and water in the middle or below is broken along with its 癖. **Contains dichroa root, which is emetic and hepatotoxic; this must not be prepared. It also contains pangolin scale, taken from a species protected under CITES. Malaria requires modern antimalarial treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
