Translation

Dichroa root, aged tangerine peel, green tangerine peel, areca seed, tsaoko fruit, magnolia bark and licorice, 1 don each. Cut them up, make one packet, half wine and half water, add five slices of ginger and two mume plums, decoct them together, and leave it out overnight in the dew. Take it warm in the early morning; it must bring vomiting for the cure. ○ Another name for it is Chilbo-tang 七寶湯. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven drugs, and the seven treasures of the name are simply those seven. Pyeongwi-san supplies four of them — aged tangerine peel, magnolia bark, licorice and, in place of atractylodes, green tangerine peel — and dichroa root, tsaoko fruit and areca seed make it a 截瘧 prescription. It is the best known of the Bogam's malaria-cutting drinks and the one the chapter names first at 截瘧法 alongside Buri-eum. The preparation carries as much weight as the drugs: half wine and half water, left out all night in the dew, taken warm at dawn on the day the paroxysm is due. 露 here is a method, not an ingredient — the overnight cooling was held to temper the dichroa and fit the medicine to the moment the cold and heat are about to turn. **Contains dichroa root, which is emetic and hepatotoxic, and the formula is dosed deliberately to vomiting. This must not be prepared. Malaria requires modern antimalarial treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
