Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久瘧不愈, 一服便差, 永不發如神. 常山一錢半, 檳榔一錢, 丁香半錢, 烏梅一箇. 右剉, 作一貼, 好酒一盞浸一宿. 臨發日淸晨溫服. ○卽正傳截瘧方也. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats a long malaria that will not heal: one dose and it is cured, never to break out again — like a miracle. Dichroa root, 1 don 5 fun; areca seed, 1 don; clove, half a don; mume plum, one. Cut them up, make one packet, and steep overnight in a cup of good wine. Clinical commentary 臨床

The shortest 截瘧 formula in the chapter and the one that makes the largest claim — 一服便差, 永不發如神, one dose and cured, never to return. Four drugs: dichroa root to eject, areca seed to drive down, clove to settle the stomach against the dichroa, one mume plum to bind. Nothing is decocted; the packet is steeped overnight in a cup of good wine and drunk at first light. It is worth noticing what the chapter puts immediately before this family of prescriptions: 世有砒丹等截藥, 大毒, 不可輕用 — there are arsenic elixirs among the cutting drugs, violently toxic, not to be used lightly. The compiler knew the 截 method ran to poisons and said so, then printed them anyway, which is the honest shape of the 截瘧法 section. **Contains dichroa root, which is emetic and hepatotoxic.
