Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸瘧疾, 一劑截住, 神效. 雞心檳榔(要一雌一雄, 若重二錢則餘藥各二錢)ㆍ常山ㆍ知母ㆍ貝母各等分. 右剉, 作一貼, 酒一鍾, 煎至八分, 不可過熟, 熟則不效. 露一宿, 臨發日五更溫服. 勿令婦人煎藥. 《醫鑑》 ○一名止瘧散. 《十三方》

Translation

Treats the various malarial diseases: one packet stops them, with miraculous effect. Chicken-heart areca seed — one female and one male nut are wanted, and if they weigh 2 don then the other drugs are 2 don each — with dichroa root, anemarrhena and fritillaria, in equal parts. Cut them up, make one packet, and decoct in a cup of wine down to eight parts; it must not be overcooked, for if it is cooked too long it has no effect. Leave it out overnight in the dew and take it warm at the fifth watch on the day the paroxysm is due. Do not let a woman decoct the medicine. ○ Another name for it is Jihak-san 止瘧散. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

不二, no second — the name promises that one packet will do it, and 截瘧法 names this drink and Seunggeum-hwan as the two to reach for when a malaria must be stopped outright. Four drugs in equal parts, and the measure is taken not from a scale but from the areca: a matched pair of chicken-heart nuts, one called female and one male, whose weight then sets the weight of everything else. The instructions are more particular than the recipe. A cup of wine boiled down to eight parts and no further, because 熟則不效 — overcook it and it does nothing; the pot left out all night in the dew; the draught taken at the fifth watch before the paroxysm can start. The closing line, 勿令婦人煎藥, do not let a woman decoct it, belongs to the same world as the 禳法 at the end of the chapter and is printed here as the source has it, not because it bears on the medicine. **Contains dichroa root, which is emetic and hepatotoxic.
