Translation

Treats every kind of malaria and is able to cut it off. Dichroa root, 4 nyang, steeped in wine overnight and sun-dried; black atractylodes steeped in rice-washing water and sun-dried, areca seed and tsaoko fruit, 2 nyang each. Powder them; take the wine left over from steeping the dichroa, cook it into a paste and make pills the size of a firmiana seed. Fifty pills a dose, sent down with warm wine on going to bed the day before, and then lie down; at cockcrow on the day the paroxysm is due take seventy pills. Avoid raw, cold and hot things. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs and nothing wasted: the wine the dichroa was steeped in is boiled down for the pill paste, so the alcohol-soluble part of the root that would otherwise be thrown away goes back into the medicine. That is a deliberate piece of pharmacy, and it makes this the most concentrated of the chapter's dichroa preparations even though the drug list is the shortest. 截瘧法 names this pill with Buri-eum as the pair to use when a malaria has run several paroxysms and must be stopped. The dosing follows the same clock as the drinks — fifty pills at bedtime, seventy more at cockcrow on the day the fever is due — and the food prohibitions after it are the chapter's standing ones, since 凡瘧大忌飽食, malaria above all forbids eating to fullness. **Contains dichroa root, which is emetic and hepatotoxic, and the dose here is large. This must not be prepared. Malaria requires modern antimalarial treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
