Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治脾虛作瘧, 不問寒熱先後, 宜服. 蒼朮二錢, 厚朴ㆍ陳皮ㆍ靑皮ㆍ大腹皮ㆍ檳榔ㆍ草果各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三ㆍ棗二, 水煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats a vacuous spleen making malaria; without asking whether cold or heat comes first, this is the one to take. Black atractylodes, 2 don; magnolia bark, aged tangerine peel, green tangerine peel, areca husk, areca seed and tsaoko fruit, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut them up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Pyeongwi-san with green tangerine peel, areca husk, areca seed and tsaoko fruit added — the four additions all drive qi downward and dry damp, which is what the chapter means by 不問寒熱先後: where the spleen is the thing at fault, the order in which the cold and the heat arrive stops mattering and the middle is treated instead of the paroxysm. Tsaoko fruit and magnolia bark are the chapter's named pair for the cold malarias — 寒瘧非草果厚朴不能溫散, cold malaria cannot be warmed and dispersed without tsaoko and magnolia bark — so this is a formula leaning to the cold side of the門 even though it declines to say so. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
