Clinical commentary 臨床

The name is the recipe: 柴 for Sosiho-tang and 平 for Pyeongwi-san, the two formulas run together and the shared licorice counted once. Bupleurum, scutellaria, pinellia, ginseng and licorice are the one; black atractylodes, magnolia bark, aged tangerine peel and licorice the other. The chapter's own instruction at 瘧疾治法 is that 挾痰合二陳湯, 食積合平胃散 — pair the lesser yang formula with Pyeongwi-san where there is food accumulation — and this is that pairing written out as a standing prescription. The reasoning behind it is visible and sound on its own terms: the alternating cold and heat is read as a lesser yang matter and the thick tongue and lost appetite as damp in the middle, so one formula is given for each. The mume plum at the end is the chapter's own addition, 口渴加烏梅, for the thirst. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic raw and must be properly processed before use.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
