Translation

Treats yin toxin with a green face, cold limbs, an agitated heart and abdominal pain. Powder sulphur and take 2 don each time stirred into newly drawn water. After a good while there may be a bout of cold and a bout of heat; take it again, and with the sweating there is recovery. — Boje Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Two don of raw powdered sulphur taken by mouth is a poisoning; sulphur is reduced in the gut to hydrogen sulphide and causes vomiting, diarrhoea and, in quantity, systemic toxicity. The clinical note is nonetheless worth reading: after a good while there may be a bout of cold and a bout of heat. That is a rigor, and whoever wrote it had watched the patient through it and taken it as the sign to repeat the dose. The cold-water vehicle for a drug given to warm a patient is the same device the chapter uses throughout. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
