Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治爛弦風. 白蜜二兩, 爐甘石一兩火煆十次, 淬水中浸半日, 黃丹水飛六錢, 烏賊魚骨一錢, 䃃砂細硏水飛, 入磁器中重湯煮令自乾ㆍ麝香各五分, 白丁香二分半, 輕粉一分. 右將蜜於砂石器內慢火熬去沫, 下甘石末, 次下黃丹, 以柳枝攪, 次下餘藥, 以不粘手爲度, 作丸如芡實大. 每一丸, 溫水化開, 常點之. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats rotten-rim wind. White honey 2 nyang; calamine 1 nyang, calcined ten times and quenched in water then steeped half a day; red lead water-levigated 6 don; cuttlebone 1 don; sal ammoniac finely ground and water-levigated then boiled in a double vessel until dry, and musk, 5 pun each; sparrow droppings 2 pun 5 ri; calomel 1 pun. Simmer the honey in an earthen vessel over a low fire and skim it; put in the calamine powder, then the red lead, stirring with a willow twig, then the rest, until it no longer sticks to the hand; make pills the size of a water-caltrop. Dissolve one in warm water and dot it on regularly. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A honey base cooked down and stirred with a willow twig — wood rather than metal, because the lead and the sal ammoniac would attack iron. The pill is a concentrate dissolved fresh each time, which is a sensible way to keep an eye preparation from spoiling, and the only sensible thing about it. **Contains red lead, sal ammoniac, calomel and musk, placed on the eye.
