Translation

Treats rotten-rim wind. Calamine, any quantity: first calcine and quench it seven times in a child's urine, then seven times in a coptis decoction, then seven times in sparrow-tongue tea; combine the three liquors in one place and calcine three times more; cool, grind fine, stir in a little borneol and musk, and dot it on the lid margin — divinely effective. Another: green calamine calcined and quenched in a child's urine three times, left a day and a night to let the fire toxin out, ground fine, mixed with powdered coptis, steeped in a child's urine and the clear liquor dotted on the lid. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 · Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-four quenchings in three different liquors, then three more calcinings — the most laborious preparation in the chapter, and the product is zinc carbonate converted toward the oxide. Calamine is still used on inflamed skin for the same reason it is used here: it is astringent, mildly antiseptic and soothing. The instruction to let the fire toxin out for a day and a night is the Jikji being careful with a freshly calcined mineral. **Contains musk from a CITES-listed species; prepare without it.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
