Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

Translation

Treats water getting into the ear in bathing and turning to a pus-filled ear; it also treats a child's running ear. Calcined alum, dragon bone (calcined), red lead (water-ground), rouge (burnt to ash) and cuttlefish bone (calcined) 1 don each; a little musk. Powder them; first wipe the ear dry of pus with a twist of paper, then dust the medicine in on a twist of cotton wool, changing it daily. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

先以紙撚拭乾膿水 — first wipe the discharge dry with a paper wick. Cleaning the canal before putting anything into it, and doing it daily, is the part of this that still holds; the powder is a drying astringent. **Contains red lead, which is toxic; musk is CITES-listed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
