Clinical commentary 臨床

Three cold drugs at the front at a full don each and everything else at a half or less, which is how the Hoechun writes a formula for heat in a patient who is also depleted: coptis and gardenia for the fire, bamboo shavings for the counterflow, then ginseng, ophiopogon and jujube to put back what the vomiting and thirst have taken. Coptis fried in ginger juice and gardenia fried black are both preparations meant to stop a cold bitter drug from provoking more vomiting, and the smoked plum at the end is there for the same reason — the chapter says at 2.3 that in a heat vomiting one cannot do without it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
