Translation

Treats stomach heat with nausea and unceasing dry retching. Dry-fried gardenia, 3 don; tangerine peel, 2 don; green bamboo shavings, 1 don 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water, and give with ginger juice stirred in. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs, with the ginger juice added at the end rather than decocted — the pattern the chapter uses whenever a cold formula has to be got into a retching patient. Gardenia dry-fried at 3 don is the whole of the cooling, and bamboo shavings and tangerine peel do the rest. The section it closes treats 惡心 and 乾嘔 as different things: nausea is wanting to vomit and not managing it, dry retching is retching with nothing to bring up. This formula is for the hot form of both. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
