Phellodendron Powder

Hwangbaek-san

한글 황백산 (탕화창)  ·  Pinyin Huang Bai San

黃栢散

治同上 refers back to the 保生救苦散 leaf immediately above, 治湯火熱油所傷爛痛. The leaf writes 雞子殼 where the herb list heads the drug 雞卵殼; the same substance, and it is registered under that identifier. Two other entries share this name: the 入門 黃栢散 of the Mouth and Tongue chapter, a bark plaster for 唇繭, registered as hwangbaek-san-gu, and 黃白散, which romanises the same; this chapter's leaf takes the tail.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The 保生救苦散 above with crude mirabilite and powdered eggshell added — the same bitter barks and drying minerals, a little more absorbent, and made up with cold water instead of oil. Of the five burn powders at 2.15 this and 氷霜散 are the two that reach for a nitre salt. Mirabilite is the ingredient to think about. Sodium sulphate decahydrate dissolves endothermically, so a paste of it genuinely feels cold going on, and that is probably why it is here — a cooling sensation on a burn, arrived at empirically. It is also a hyperosmotic salt, and on a broken burn surface it stings and draws fluid; eggshell is calcium carbonate and does nothing but absorb. **The chapter's own first aid at 2.15 is dangerous: 急向火灸 and 愼勿以冷物搨之, hold it to the fire and press nothing cold on it, are both the reverse of what a burn needs.** Twenty minutes of cool running water within the first three hours reduces the final depth of the injury; added heat extends it. The honey of the 單方 at 2.15.1 is the only burn remedy in this chapter with modern support. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
