Translation

Treats the painful breakdown caused by a scald, a burn or hot oil. Glauberite, rhubarb and phellodendron, equal parts of each. Powder them and spread on with raw sesame oil, or dust on dry. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Glauberite for drying, rhubarb and phellodendron for the bitter tannins, in equal parts, with the choice of vehicle left to the state of the surface: oil when it is dry, dry powder when it is weeping. 熱油所傷, scalded by hot oil, is named separately from fire and water throughout this section, which tells you something about a kitchen. As a dressing it is bland and defensible. The two bitter barks are the traditional antiseptics a burn clinic would recognise, and raw sesame oil is an emollient that keeps the powder from bonding to the wound. Nothing in it will heal a burn, but nothing in it will deepen one either. **The chapter's first aid at 2.15 — hold the burn to the fire, and press nothing cold on it — is backwards and must not be followed.** Cool running water for twenty minutes, begun as soon as possible and still of use within three hours, is what limits the depth of a burn; further heat extends it. Of the burn remedies in this section the honey of the 單方 at 2.15.1 is the only one with modern evidence behind it, being antibacterial, moisture-retaining and non-adherent at dressing changes. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
