Clinical commentary 臨床

A base of six drugs with sixteen named modifications, one for each kind of cough the period recognized — by organ, by cause and by circumstance. Read as a whole it is a prescribing table rather than a formula: the physician keeps the powder made up and adds one thing at the time of decocting, which is how a single preparation was made to serve a whole clinic. The modifications are not arbitrary. Clam shell for the stomach cough, mulberry root bark for the lung, scallion for the cold cough, honey for the hot one, angelica for the bloody one — each is the standard drug for that pattern elsewhere in the Bogam, and the list is a compressed summary of the chapter's own teaching. **Contains aristolochia fruit, which carries aristolochic acid: it is nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, has caused end-stage renal failure and urothelial cancer, and must not be used. Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
