Cockcrow Pill

Gyemyeong-hwan

한글 계명환  ·  Pinyin Ji Ming Wan

雞鳴丸

加味子 — the transcription reads 加 where the first edition reads 五, that is 五味子, schisandra, which is plainly what is meant; the collation note stands at the foot of leaf 046a. The transcription's reading is printed and the drug is entered as schisandra. A second 雞鳴丸, the 中朝 formula for panting and cough generally, follows a few lines later in the chapter and is registered separately.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A universal cough pill, and the eighteen kinds listed at the end are the chapter's whole classification set out in one line — eleven by organ, three by cause, four by quality. A single formula for all of them is the opposite of the chapter's usual method, and that is what the name claims: one pill, chewed three times a day, for whatever kind of cough the patient has. The composition is sound enough on its own terms: anemarrhena in bulk for the heat, ephedra and platycodon to open the lung, inula and lepidium to move the phlegm down, glue and schisandra to hold the blood and the qi. **Contains aristolochia fruit, which carries aristolochic acid: nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, a cause of end-stage renal failure and urothelial cancer, and not to be used. Contains ephedra, a sympathomimetic, and pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state. Blood in the sputum needs investigation, not a cough pill.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
