Clinical commentary 臨床

An astringing formula, and the drug that makes it one is the poppy capsule at the head of the list, backed by schisandra and smoked plum. The chapter's own reasoning for a long cough is that the lung qi has scattered and must be gathered rather than dispersed, and everything here except the apricot kernel pulls inward. It stands immediately before Jeongcheon-tang in the chapter, and the two are easily confused: that formula is a verse prescription with much the same drugs, and the Bogam's own note there compares it not with this one but with Insam-jeongcheon-tang earlier in the chapter. **Contains the opium poppy capsule. Poppy preparations are controlled substances, suppress the cough reflex and the respiratory drive, and are addictive; this is recorded as history and must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
