Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治喘嗽久不已. 鸎粟殼(蜜炒) 五錢, 枳殼四錢, 杏仁ㆍ甘草各三錢. 右剉, 作二貼, 入薑三ㆍ梅一, 煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats panting and cough long unresolved. Honey-fried poppy capsule, 5 don; bitter orange peel, 4 don; apricot kernel and licorice, 3 don each. Cut up, make two packets, add three slices of ginger and one smoked plum, decoct and take. — Sejong Jeungbo Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, and 金不換 — not to be exchanged for gold — is the name a formula gets when it works. What it is is a poppy capsule cough suppressant with bitter orange to open the chest and apricot kernel to bring the qi down; honey-frying the capsule both sweetens and moistens it. It is the plainest instance in the chapter of a formula whose effect is not in doubt and whose use is: it would have stopped the cough, and that is why it was valued. **Contains the opium poppy capsule. Poppy preparations are controlled substances, suppress the cough reflex and the respiratory drive, and are addictive.
