Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治中風口眼喎斜ㆍ半身不遂ㆍ神昏ㆍ語澁. 麻黃ㆍ防風ㆍ白芷各一兩半, 乾生薑ㆍ甘草各七錢半, 川芎ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ桔梗ㆍ細辛ㆍ白殭蚕ㆍ羌活ㆍ南星各五錢. 右末, 蜜丸彈子大, 朱砂二錢半爲衣, 每一丸, 熱酒化下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats wind stroke with deviation of the mouth and eye, hemiplegia, a clouded spirit and halting speech. Ephedra, saposhnikovia and angelica dahurica, 1 nyang 5 don each; dried fresh ginger and licorice, 7 don 5 fun each; chuanxiong, white peony, platycodon, asarum, silkworm, notopterygium and arisaema, 5 don each. Powder, make honey pills the size of a bullet, coat with 2 don 5 fun of cinnabar, and dissolve one in hot wine. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twelve drugs with ephedra, saposhnikovia and angelica dahurica at the head, which makes it the most exterior-directed of the 諸風通治 formulas — a pill version of the sweating approach, taken in hot wine to help it along. The cinnabar coating is the only metal in it and is a quarter of the pill weight; without it the formula is an unremarkable but coherent wind prescription. The Immun's inclusion of silkworm and arisaema shows the Jin-Yuan phlegm doctrine had been absorbed even into a formula of this old shape. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
