Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治一切諸風, 及破傷風ㆍ小兒急慢驚風疾. 朱砂 一兩, 牛膽南星 七錢, 防風ㆍ川烏ㆍ天麻ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芷ㆍ人參ㆍ薄荷ㆍ木香ㆍ白朮ㆍ茯神 各五錢, 牛黃ㆍ龍腦ㆍ乾生薑ㆍ白附子 各三錢, 麝香 二錢, 全蝎 二十箇(生用), 白殭蚕 二十一箇(生用). 右細末, 用麻黃 一斤, 甘草 八兩, 蜂蜜 二兩, 煎作膏子, 入藥末和勻, 兩作十錠, 金箔爲衣, 每一錠, 溫酒化下. 《活心》

Translation

Treats all wind diseases, and lockjaw, and acute and chronic fright wind in children. Cinnabar, 1 nyang; ox-bile-prepared arisaema, 7 don; saposhnikovia, aconite kusnezoffii, gastrodia, chuanxiong, angelica dahurica, ginseng, mint, costus, atractylodes and poria spirit, 5 don each; ox gallstone, borneol, dried fresh ginger and typhonium, 3 don each; musk, 2 don; whole scorpion, twenty, used raw; silkworm, twenty-one, used raw. Make a fine powder; boil 1 geun of ephedra, 8 nyang of licorice and 2 nyang of honey into a paste, mix the powder into it evenly, make ten lozenges to the nyang, coat with gold foil, and dissolve one in warm wine. — Hwalinsimbeop 活心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** A nyang of cinnabar heads the weights, and musk is CITES-listed; and the indication explicitly includes children, for whom the mercury dose is proportionally far worse. The construction is worth noting for its binder: rather than honey alone, a pound of ephedra and half a pound of licorice are boiled down with honey into a paste, so the vehicle itself is a sweating medicine and the lozenge carries a dose of ephedra in every unit. That is an ingenious piece of pharmacy and it is also what makes the formula a hidden stimulant. Gold foil on the outside belongs to the dispensary's theatre. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
