Black Dragon Elixir

Oryong-dan

烏龍丹

去皮臍 — skin and navel removed — is the minimum preparation for aconite kusnezoffii and falls well short of detoxification. The dose-response claim, five to seven pills then ten, is the Jijibang's own.

Translation

Treats wind stroke with deviation of the mouth and eye, the hands and feet hanging useless and halting speech; of proven effect. Raw aconite kusnezoffii with the skin and navel removed, and trogopterus dung, 2 nyang each. Powder, add borneol and musk, half a don each, mix evenly, drip water to form pills the size of a bullet; grind one in ginger juice first, then take the next day stirred into warmed wine, twice a day. At five to seven pills the hand begins to move and the foot to step; at ten the patient can comb his own hair. — Injae Jijibang 直指 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Two nyang of raw aconite kusnezoffii with nothing but the skin removed is the most dangerous single quantity in the chapter; the dose-response claim — the hand moves at five pills, the patient combs his own hair at ten — is exactly the sort of report that kept such formulas in use. Musk is CITES-listed. The interest of the entry is its economy: two drugs, one to force the yang through the channels and one to break the stasis, with the two aromatics only to carry them. Recorded here as history. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
