Translation

Treats wind stroke with deviation of the mouth and eye, paralysis, drool rising, halting speech, cramping sinews and aching bones; whatever is a wind disease, there is none it does not treat. Trogopterus dung, 2 nyang; blast-fried aconite kusnezoffii, 1 nyang; frankincense and myrrh, 5 don each; musk, 1 don. Powder, drip water to form pills the size of a bullet, and dissolve one in mint wine. — Taepyeong Hyeminhwajegukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Oryong-dan with the aconite processed and the analgesic pair added, which makes it the safer and better-aimed of the two. The symptom list — cramping sinews and aching bones — tells you what it is really for: the painful spastic limb rather than the paralysed one, and frankincense, myrrh and trogopterus dung are the tradition's standard answer to that. Musk is CITES-listed; the blast-fried aconite still demands care. Mint wine as the vehicle is an odd and pleasant touch. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
