Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治中風癱瘓疼痛. 烏藥ㆍ陳皮ㆍ麻黃ㆍ川芎ㆍ枳殼ㆍ白殭蚕ㆍ桔梗ㆍ白芷ㆍ乾薑ㆍ防風ㆍ羌活ㆍ天麻ㆍ當歸ㆍ續斷ㆍ威靈仙ㆍ甘草各六分, 乳香ㆍ沒藥ㆍ麝香各三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎, 入乳ㆍ沒ㆍ麝三味細末調服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats wind stroke with paralysis and pain. Lindera, tangerine peel, ephedra, chuanxiong, bitter orange, silkworm, platycodon, angelica dahurica, dried ginger, saposhnikovia, notopterygium, gastrodia, tangkuei, dipsacus, clematis and licorice, 6 fun each; frankincense, myrrh and musk, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water, then stir in the three finely powdered drugs — frankincense, myrrh and musk — and take. — Uihak Jeonggam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula for the stroke that hurts — and post-stroke pain, whether from spasticity, frozen shoulder or central pain, is common and badly served by the rest of the chapter. Sixteen drugs at equal weight to move qi and dispel wind, and then the pain-stopping trio stirred in at the end: frankincense, myrrh and musk, which are the tradition's standard analgesic combination and appear together whenever a formula's business is pain rather than pattern.
