Translation

Treats enduring wind become undigested-food diarrhoea, the patient not drinking water and the grain coming out whole. Atractylodes, 6 don; ephedra, 2 don; saposhnikovia, 1 don. Cut up, make one packet, add seven slices of ginger, and decoct in water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Paired with the preceding formula by its indication: no thirst, where the other had thirst, and whole grain in the stool. Dongwon reads that as wind lodged in the gut and treats it by sweating — ephedra at 2 don in a diarrhoea is a startling prescription, and the logic is that the wind must be driven out at the surface before the bowel will hold. Modern practice would not sweat a patient with chronic diarrhoea, and the ephedrine would worsen the fluid loss; the pairing with Bangpung-jakyak-tang is nonetheless a genuine attempt at differential prescribing on a single sign. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
