Translation

Treats wind damp with a slippery diarrhoea. Medicated leaven, chuanxiong, white atractylodes and blast-fried aconite, equal parts. Powder, make pills with wheat-flour paste the size of a paulownia seed, and take thirty to fifty on an empty stomach in rice water. The Zuozhuan says that wheat leaven and chuanxiong can remove dampness. Where the spleen is damp and there is diarrhoea, it does not miss once in ten thousand; it also treats undigested-food diarrhoea. — Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, and the interest is in the pair the Bonsa borrows from the Zuozhuan: leaven and chuanxiong together to remove damp. Leaven is a digestive, chuanxiong an aromatic blood mover, and the claim that the two together dry the spleen is the sort of classical authority this chapter reaches for when the pharmacology is thin. The aconite makes it a warm formula, so the stool it suits is the cold slippery one, not the hot urgent one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
