Translation

Treats the cavernous diarrhoea. Stir-fried white atractylodes, 3 don; stir-fried white peony, 2 don; stir-fried tangerine peel, 1.5 don; saposhnikovia, 1 don; cimicifuga, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. This is Liu Chuangchuang's essential formula for the cavernous diarrhoea. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The cavernous diarrhoea is the chapter's name for a stool that runs straight through as if the bowel had no floor, and Liu Chuangchuang's answer to it is the formula that gave Dongwon's school its signature move: raise the yang with cimicifuga and saposhnikovia in small doses on top of a large dose of atractylodes. The idea is that a pouring diarrhoea is qi sinking rather than fluid in excess, so the treatment lifts instead of drains — and the chapter later gives a whole section to this principle. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
