Soul-Returning Life-Chasing Remaking Powder

Banhonchumyeongjaejo-san

한글 반혼추명재조산  ·  Pinyin Fan Hun Zhui Ming Zai Zao San

返魂追命再造散

The transcription writes 虫 for 蟲 and 晒 for 曬; the corpus forms are printed. The ○ clause is headed 一方 within this leaf rather than standing as a leaf of its own, so it is kept here and is not registered separately; it carries its own source label 本草 against the 直指 of the formula proper. The one-or-two geun of gleditsia spine in the 一方 is a range and no gram figure is entered for it.

Translation

Treats great wind leprosy. Gleditsia spine 1 nyang 5 don; rhubarb 1 nyang. Powder the above; two don to a dose stirred into cold wine, and it purges the worms out. — Jikji 直指 ○ Another method treats great wind grown so grave it cannot be saved. Gleditsia spine, one or two geun, nine times steamed and nine times sun-dried, ground to a powder, and 1 don sent down after food in a strong rhubarb decoction. In ten days the beard and hair grow again, the skin becomes glad and smooth, the eyes see twice as clearly as usual, and the effect is like a god's. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and the grandest name in the chapter attached to them. Gleditsia spine at a nyang and a half with rhubarb at a nyang, taken in cold wine, and the object is stated flatly: 瀉蟲出, purge the worms out. It is the same reasoning as Chupung-san and Tongcheonjaejo-san, pared down to its two working drugs. The 一方 appended to it is worth reading for what the chapter was prepared to promise. One or two geun of gleditsia spine, nine times steamed and nine times sun-dried, with a strong rhubarb decoction to carry it, and in ten days the beard grows back and the eyes see twice as well. Against the chapter's own 終無一人免於死 a few leaves earlier, the two statements cannot both be true, and the Bogam prints them side by side without comment. **Contains rhubarb as a purgative, in the 一方 at a strong decoction with up to two geun of gleditsia spine. This must not be prepared.** Repeated purging in a wasted patient is the hazard, and the hair regrowth promised is not a possible effect of either drug. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
