Heal the Wind Elixir

Yupung-dan

한글 유풍단  ·  Pinyin Yu Feng Dan

愈風丹

土桃蛇 has no entry in the herb list and is left out of the ingredients; it is the third of the three snakes that give the formula its alternative name 三蛇丹, and the 大風瘡 section sends 眉鬚落者 to 三蛇丹, which is this leaf. 並 is printed as the transcription has it, the corpus not normalising 並/幷. The snakes are counted by the piece and carry no gram figure. The geun of sophora root is the quantity cut and pounded, of which only the 四兩 of first flour is used, and the gram figure is for the geun named with the instruction kept in the prep. 防風通聖散 is linked; the transcription gives no 方見 note here, so no sochu span is added.

Treats great wind with the hair fallen and the eyebrows gone, numbness over the whole body and sores ulcerated. Black-striped snake, pit viper and 土桃蛇, one of each, all steeped in wine for three days, the flesh then taken and powdered. Sophora root 1 geun, cut and pounded, and the first flour of it, 4 nyang, taken. Decoct gleditsia pod strong, reduce the juice to an extract, and make pills with it the size of a paulownia seed; swallow down fifty in a decoction of Bangpungtongseong-san, twice a day. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Three Snake Elixir, and the formula the 大風瘡 section reaches for when the eyebrows and beard have gone — 眉鬚落者三蛇丹. Black-striped snake, pit viper and the 土桃蛇, one of each, steeped three days in wine and only the flesh taken and powdered; sophora root pounded and only its first flour used; gleditsia pod boiled down to bind the whole. The refinements are the point of it, each drug reduced to the part held to carry the virtue. It is not taken alone. The pills go down in a decoction of Bangpungtongseong-san twice a day, so the patient is on the chapter's standard wind-purging base throughout — the same arrangement Tongcheonjaejo-san sets up for the period after its purge. **Contains pit viper, a CITES-listed material, and the raw flesh of three snakes taken internally. This must not be prepared.** Madarosis and widespread anaesthesia mean established lepromatous disease with nerve damage; the treatment is multidrug therapy, and the damage already done to nerves will not reverse with it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
