治癩風白屑瘡痒, 皮膚皴燥. 白花蛇 一條, 當歸 二兩, 川芎ㆍ白芷ㆍ生地黃ㆍ防風ㆍ荊芥ㆍ酒芩ㆍ連翹ㆍ胡麻子ㆍ何首烏ㆍ升麻ㆍ羌活ㆍ桔梗 各一兩. 右爲末, 將浸蛇酒和水, 煮麵糊和丸梧子大, 茶淸下五七十丸. 《入門》

Translation

Treats leprous wind with white scurf, itching sores, and skin cracked and dry. One pit viper; Korean angelica 2 nyang; cnidium, Dahurian angelica, raw rehmannia, siler, schizonepeta, wine-treated scutellaria, forsythia, black sesame seed, fleeceflower root, cimicifuga, notopterygium and platycodon 1 nyang each. Powder the above; take the wine the snake was steeped in, mix it with water, boil a flour paste in it and make pills the size of a paulownia seed, and send down fifty to seventy in clear tea. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula of the 白癩瘡 subsection, and the chapter sends two things to it: 起白屑者白花蛇丸 in the 大風瘡 section, and, in 白癩瘡 itself, 宜服解毒雄黃元兼服白花蛇丸 — Haedok-unghwang-won with this taken alongside. The presentation is precise: 癩風初起白屑剝落, 又一種每朝瘡上退白皮一升許如蛇蛻, leprous wind beginning with white scurf flaking off, and a kind in which about a seung of white skin peels from the sores every morning like a snake sloughing. One pit viper leads twelve plant drugs. The group behind it is a familiar blood-and-wind set — Korean angelica doubled, cnidium, raw rehmannia, siler, schizonepeta, with wine-treated scutellaria and forsythia for the heat and black sesame and fleeceflower root for the dryness. The wine the snake was steeped in is not discarded: it boils the flour paste that binds the pills, so nothing of the snake is lost. **Contains pit viper, a CITES-listed material.** The description of a seung of skin shed daily is severe exfoliation, which in modern terms is more likely erythrodermic or extensive scaling dermatitis than leprosy; where it is leprosy, the treatment is multidrug therapy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
