Translation

Treats the same as above. Aster, apricot kernel and coltsfoot flower, 1 nyang each; ephedra, platycodon, chebule and asarum, 5 don each; calcined alum, 1 don; walnut flesh, 1 nyang; fresh ginger, 2 nyang, for its juice; clear oil, 8 nyang; honey, 1 geun. First render the oil, then put in the honey and boil it and skim off the froth, then drop in the powdered drugs and stir them through evenly; two or three spoonfuls each dose, stirred into plain hot water, at bedtime. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A syrup rather than a decoction, and the form is the point: oil and a geun of honey carry the powdered drugs, two or three spoonfuls are taken at bedtime, and the sweet oily base coats a throat that a decoction would only pass over. Aster, coltsfoot and apricot kernel are the standard trio for a cough that will not clear; walnut flesh is there for the same oily reason as the base. **Contains ephedra, a sympathomimetic, and asarum, which contains aristolochic acid in some species and is nephrotoxic in quantity. This is not to be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
