Translation

An essential medicine for the several dysenteries. Coptis, costus root, bitter orange, red poria, stir-fried medicated leaven and stir-fried barley sprout, equal parts. Powder, make pills with medicated-leaven paste the size of a paulownia seed, and take fifty to seventy each time: for red dysentery in a licorice decoction, for white dysentery in a dried-ginger decoction, and for red and white dysentery in a decoction of dried ginger and licorice. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Costus and Coptis Pill with bitter orange, poria and the two digestives added — the Immun's answer to a dysentery that began with food. The vehicle again carries the diagnosis: licorice for the red, ginger for the white, both for the mixed, so one pill serves three cases. That device recurs so often in this chapter that it is clearly standard dispensing practice rather than a curiosity. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
