Donguibogam

Translation

Gardenia governs accumulated heat with the heart agitated, and drains the fire of the three burners; decoct it in water and drink. ○ Or take the kernels, parch them black, powder them, make pills with wheat-flour paste and take them: it is called Yugeum-hwan. If they are made into pills with honey, it is called Sanchi-hwan. It is also able to remove vexing heat of the heart and chest. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug and two names, decided by nothing but the binder — flour paste for Yugeum-hwan, honey for Sanchi-hwan — and the Bogam records both as though they were separate prescriptions. That is worth noticing, because it is the clearest evidence in the book that the vehicle was taken to change what a formula does: honey moistens, flour paste does not. 柔金, supple gold, is the lung softened, metal being the lung's phase. Gardenia parched black is the standard processing where the drug is meant to reach the blood. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
