大黃, 蕩滌實熱ㆍ血熱及藏府積熱. ○又治風熱生瘡癤. 大黃 二兩ㆍ荊芥 四兩, 水煎服, 名荊黃湯. 《得效》

Translation

Rhubarb washes out repletion heat, heat in the blood, and accumulated heat of the viscera and bowels. ○ It also treats sores and boils engendered by wind heat: rhubarb 2 nyang and schizonepeta 4 nyang, decocted in water and taken. It is called Hyeonghwang-tang. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same two herbs as the Immun's formula of this name, in different weights and for a different complaint — twice as much rhubarb here, and the indication moved from the throat to the skin. The logic is the chapter's: a boil is heat that has found its way out, so purge the heat and scatter what remains at the surface. Rhubarb in these amounts is a purgative and will act as one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
