Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治咳嗽唾咯血. 薄荷一斤, 麥門冬四兩, 蒲黃ㆍ阿膠各二兩, 甘草一兩半, 人參ㆍ黃芪各一兩. 右爲末. 別以柴胡, 木通各二兩剉, 用湯半椀浸二宿取汁. 用蜜二斤煉一二沸, 入生乾地黃末六兩, 攪勻, 入柴胡, 木通汁慢火熬成膏. 然後將前藥末, 同搜和爲丸豌豆大, 熟水下二十丸. 《局方》

Translation

Treats cough with spitting and hawking of blood. Mint 1 geun; ophiopogon 4 nyang; cattail pollen and ass-hide glue 2 nyang each; licorice 1 nyang 5 don; ginseng and astragalus 1 nyang each. Powder them. Separately cut up bupleurum and akebia 2 nyang each, steep two nights in half a bowl of hot water and take the liquor. Boil 2 geun of honey to one or two bubblings, stir in 6 nyang of powdered dried fresh rehmannia evenly, add the bupleurum and akebia liquor and reduce over a slow fire to a paste; then knead the foregoing powder into it and make pills the size of a pea, twenty taken with boiled water. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A pound of mint leads a formula for coughing blood, and the name promises borneol that the composition does not contain — the Bogam records it as the Gukbang has it, and the chapter's Yongnoe-eumja in the Fire chapter has the same gap. The mint is for the lung and the throat, and the tradition read a bleeding cough as heat in the lung that mint disperses.
