Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治五種癲癎, 無問遠近. 白茯苓三兩, 人參ㆍ地骨皮ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ甘草各二兩, 桑白皮ㆍ犀角(鎊) 各一兩, 牛黃五錢, 龍腦ㆍ麝香各三錢, 朱砂ㆍ馬牙硝各二錢, 金箔三十五片. 右爲末, 蜜丸彈子大, 金箔爲衣, 每一丸冬溫水夏凉水化下. 《河間》 ○<span class='sochu'>正傳用茯神</span>

Translation

Treats the five kinds of withdrawal-epilepsy, whether new or of long standing. White poria, 3 nyang; ginseng, lycium bark, ophiopogon and licorice, 2 nyang each; mulberry root bark and rhinoceros horn (filed), 1 nyang each; bezoar, 5 don; borneol and musk, 3 don each; cinnabar and mirabilite crystal, 2 don each; gold leaf, thirty-five leaves. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a bullet, coat with gold leaf, and dissolve one at a time in warm water in winter and cool water in summer. <span class='sochu'>The Jeongjeon uses poria spirit.</span> — Hagan 河間 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Rhinoceros horn, bezoar and musk are from protected species and the pill carries cinnabar as well. The plant half is unusual and interesting: 地骨皮ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ麥門冬 with poria and ginseng is a lung-cooling formula, not a heart one, and Liu Hejian's reasoning is that the fire driving the fits is to be drawn off through the lung. 無問遠近, new or long-standing — the Bogam cites it at 5.13 both for the thin fiery patient and for the five epilepsies in general. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
