Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治忿怒動膽火致左耳聾. 黃連ㆍ黃芩ㆍ梔子ㆍ當歸ㆍ陳皮ㆍ牛膽南星各一錢, 草龍膽ㆍ香附子各八分, 玄參七分, 靑黛ㆍ木香各五分, 乾薑(炒黑) 三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 水煎, 入玄明粉三分服. 《回春》

Translation

Treats rage stirring the gallbladder fire so that the left ear goes deaf. Coptis, scutellaria, gardenia, angelica, tangerine peel and ox-bile arisaema 1 don each; gentian and cyperus 8 pun each; scrophularia 7 pun; indigo and costus 5 pun each; dried ginger (fried black) 3 pun. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and stir in 3 pun of mirabilite powder. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

4.5.1 divides deafness by side — the left to gallbladder fire from anger, the right to kidney fire from desire, both to stomach fire from rich food and wine — and this is the left one. 4.5.3 adds that women more often have the left and men the right, for those same reasons. **Contains arisaema, which is toxic.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
