治小兒白禿頭瘡. 豆豉半升, 草龍膽ㆍ蕪荑各二錢半. 右燒存性爲末, 香油半斤, 熬至四兩, 下藥調勻付之, 神效. 《得效》

Translation

Treats a child's white bald head sores. Fermented soybean half a seung, gentian and elm fruit 2 don 5 pun each. Burn them with their nature retained and powder them; take half a geun of sesame oil, boil it down to 4 nyang, put the powder in, stir it even and apply it. Marvellously effective. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The black of the name is literal: all three drugs are charred 燒存性 and the oil is reduced by half over heat, so the finished paste is black. Fermented soybean at half a seung is the bulk of it, with gentian for the heat and elm fruit as the parasiticide, and the reduced sesame oil as a thick occlusive base. For once there is nothing poisonous in the leaf. A charcoal-and-oil paste on a crusted scalp is a reasonable dressing — it would soften and lift crust, and charred material is mildly adsorbent and deodorising. The chapter names it together with Yeonsang-san at the foot of the 癩頭瘡 section, 連床散如聖黑膏亦佳, and of the two this is the one that could be put on a child without harm. 白禿頭瘡 is tinea capitis, and no external paste clears it, because the dermatophyte is inside the hair shaft where a topical cannot reach. The disease was and is a childhood one, and an oral antifungal is the treatment.
