Realgar and Alum Pill

Ungban-hwan

한글 웅반환  ·  Pinyin Xiong Fan Wan

雄礬丸

A one-line derivative leaf: the base is 蠟礬丸, registered as napban-hwan from the Abscesses chapter, and its two drugs are carried in the ingredient list at the doses that leaf gives them. 等分 is relative to the base and the leaf does not say to what, so realgar is listed without a weight. The transcription writes 癕 for 癰 and 黄 for 黃; the standard forms are printed.

Translation

Treats worm toxin and the toxin of insects and snakes. It is the Beeswax and Alum Pill — the formula is given in the Abscesses chapter — with an equal part of realgar added, made into pills the size of a firmiana seed. Seven pills to a dose, swallowed down with boiled water. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Beeswax and alum, which is 蠟礬丸 — a pill the Abscesses chapter gives to 衛護內膜, guard the inner membrane, in a patient with an abscess or a drug-induced sore — with realgar added to make it an antidote. The beeswax is inert and the alum is astringent, so what is new in this version is the arsenic. The chapter's reasoning is substitutional rather than pharmacological: a formula that was held to protect the interior from one kind of toxin is adapted to another by adding the mineral the chapter most associates with poisons and venoms. There is nothing in it for a snake bite, which is treated now by immobilisation, transport and antivenom where the species warrants it. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulfide. This must not be prepared or taken.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
